Summer of Service through United Way

  • Summer of Service program this year for the United Way of Utah County - Summer of Service is a summer long program designed to promote service and to involve school aged children and their families.  It is a program that offers productive activities for youth all summer long.  Service projects will be held 1-2 times a week June through August.  In the past years we have found it a bit challenging to get the word out to all of the students in our area.  Kristin Mulderig, Americorps*VISTA, United Way of Utah County, Phone 801-374-2588, Fax 801-374-2591,www.unitedwayuc.org, Visit our blog to find out more about volunteer opportunities and community resources.

THE BEST WAY FOR YOUR VOICE TO BE HEARD!! Plan now to attend your precinct caucus on March 23
A caucus is the place where individuals can make the most difference. During your caucus, you'll elect delegates to go to the county and state party conventions. Your delegates represent you as they vote on and select party candidates for offices from state legislators to US senators and congressmen. You might want to be elected as a delegate yourself, or you can make a difference by voting for someone you believe will represent you.

Reflections 2010

We want to extend our thanks to Ingrid Ellenberger who spent many hours on this years Reflections. This could not happen without her support in contacting judges and judging entries.   Three Lone Peak student entries were sent on to the State level--Collins Cochran/Film Video; Whitney Benzant/Dance; and Alyse Allred/Visual Arts.  Thanks to all of our Lone Peak students who participated in this PTA event.  Plan early and start thinking about what you can do next time!  Next year's theme is:  Together We Can

Congratulations to Proving Ground and Saints and Sinners!

After the basketball game on Jan. 29th, the Battle of the Bands took place and our own two LP bands - Proving Ground and Saints and Sinners competed. Each band was required to perform two songs--a cover song and an original song.  Proving Ground was judged to be the best band that evening and went on to perform in the Regional competition at Timpanogos High School on Feb. 6. Congratulations to both bands on their performances!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

We wanted to extend our appreciation to the parents who came to assist at Teacher Reviews on Friday, Feb. 5th. Thank you for taking time out of your day!

MAIN OFFICE CONFERENCE ROOM
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11,2009

Present: Shelly Loong, Laura Dollar, Theresa Ebert, Laurie Anderson
Stacy Woodruff, Andrea Deming,( Phoenix Alliance), Joyce Ahiyu, Zach Sundwall, Chartina Voohreis, Jody Mower, Pola Morrison, Diane Lohner, Dr. Chip Koop

Call to Order: Shelly Loong, 10:07 am
Reverence and Pledge: Theresa Ebert
Reading/approval of Minutes : Laura Dollar, approved as read
Volunteer hours this month: 24 ½
Report of the Treasurer:  Diane Lohner, no actions since last report in Oct.

Reports of Executive Board, Commissioners and Committees:
Leadership VP: Leadership training by Jody Mower –Nominating Committee and awards. Voted to leave bylaws as submitted. Swarm award Nov. 15 deadline. A list was sent around to see who would like to continue as board members next year.

Student Rep. Reported on the Gold Rush. Funds will go to the Neighborhood House (Salt Lake), a service to homeless with daycare for those who are working or looking for job. Goal: $30,000.00. Many activities are planned.

Laurie Anderson would like to find a corporate partner that would help fund recognition of students through the Shields of Honor program. Took pictures of Board.

Dr. Koop: Reported that it looked like there would be a McDonalds going in by Wal Mart and hoped we could petition or lobby the city to put a crosswalk where the kids cross. Also discussed concerns he wanted to address with them about the back field area. Dr. Koop introduced a new teachers “Associates” club.

Reflections report: We have 40 entries that will be judged and ready to go to council. Nov.13. Asked if Laurie could make certificates. Ingrid will deliver them to Alpine Elementary for judging.

Guests from the Phoenix Alliance shared their concerns and their plan of action to lobby for higher tobacco taxes and better laws to protect kids from the tobacco industry. They are especially concerned with new products that appear to be mints, candy, breathe strips, toothpicks, that are packages as such and very addictive. Dr. Koop said we seemed very supportive of helping to spread the anti- tobacco information and asked what we might do with this information. We were told that Rep. Dougall (our rep.)is not supportive of the Alliance and there are at least 12 tobacco industry lobbyists on “Capitol Hill” telling legislators that tobacco is a “non-issue” in Utah. Nov. 18th from 7:30-12:00 would like youth to attend a rally at the Capitol to advocate the importance of tobacco use prevention in the wake of tobacco industry deception and marketing. Dr. Koop suggested that the Phoenix alliance members speak to Mrs. McPherson to coordinate information distribution or opportunities to participate with Michelle Salo, our Safety and Welfare Commissioner following up on what PTSA might do to help, and will check on PTSA website to see what they have to say about the issue. Dr. Koop mentioned that there is drug use comparison data for the years 2005-2009 that could be sent in an email.

President: Shelley reported that when a person opens a new account at Chase Bank between Oct.-Dec. 2009, and mentions supporting LPHS, $50.00 would be donated to PTSA. Pola posted this on the blog.

Pola needs a copy of the Activity Report for emailed to her to post on the blog/website to make it easily accessible to anyone that may need it.

Meeting adjourned 11:25 am.

Date of next meeting: January 13, 2010, 10:00 LPHS.
