PTSA Minutes for the Feb. meeting

Lone Peak High School PTSA Meeting
Wednesday, February 9, 2011 -  Main Office Board Room
Present: Theresa Ebert, Jody Mower, Diane Lohner, Lisa Young, Laurie Anderson, Rex Brimhall, Lisa Hogge, Michele Salo, Chartina Voorheis, Melissa Walker, Melisa Pitts, Annette Kindt, Chip Koop, Ilene Barton

Excused:  Laura Dollar, Roxanne Musselman, Keleen Beckstead

Volunteer hours:  72.5 (not including Theresa’s hours)

Reports of Executive Board and Commissioners:
Treasurer Report: Diane Lohner  reported, see attached.  She suggested using PTSA money for $300 to $500 scholarships for students.  Discussed amount to spend on Be the Change and Battle of the Bands and how much will be left for scholarships.  Formed committee to decide details.  Members are Diane Lohner, Laurie Anderson, Melissa Walker.

Leadership: Annette Kindt of nominating committee reported still need president elect position filled.  The rest of executive committee positions have potentials but still trying to reach those people.  Other general board positions also need to be filled.  There will be a signup at parent teacher conference on February 16.  

President:  Theresa reported Keleen Beckstead submitted Golden Apple Award for Craig Smith.   Dress Code Committee meeting postponed until March 2 at 10am.   Roxanne Musselman asked Theresa to mention that  the February and June ACT testing dates are the only dates that offer an option to request to have test booklet returned.  On March 1 all juniors at LP will be taking ACT test during school hours in the place of the UBSCT, paid for by the state legislature.  That day only juniors attend in the morning.  

Laurie Anderson reported that Brian Alba from Utah County Substance Abuse Coalition coming to LP during Parent Teacher Conference on February 16 to make presentations on dangers of new drugs available using common home ingredients.  Charlie Thurston, LP Resource Officer, will also attend to answer questions as well.   Charlie Thurston reported trying to get approval from department to present at Lone Peak Parent Teacher Conference.  Suggested he has a fact sheet with answers available to give out.  Could also request donations for K-9 purchase from patrons. 


Reflections:  Melissa Walker said still waiting to hear who won at State level.  Lone Peak students who reached state level are Benjamin Reneer for Composition and Christopher Running in 3D Art.   

Be the Change Day:  Chip reported it is scheduled for March 10 and 11.  Begins at 8am until 2:15.  Some students will be involved in a leadership position, but an adult will be present in every group.  Kyle Nelson will be the facilitator.  Compared to last year’s Be the Change, some activities may be altered slightly, but will still be very similar.  PTSA would like to contribute funds towards program.  Will know by next month the exact amount.   Lisa Hogge reported Chick-fil- A will donate 100 lunches.  They are also willing to host a spirit night at Chick-fil-A in American Fork.  They would give vouchers to students, if voucher is presented at time of purchase, then Chick-fil-A donates 20% back to Lone Peak.  Macy’s grocery store in Pleasant Grove willing to give $200 towards food in their store if we also pay $200.  Printing company called Design Press Printing will donate 200 shirts, 4 banners to advertise Be the Change for a total of $2,000 they would sponsor, if we will get 10 $200 sponsors whose names will be printed on t-shirts.  Recommended committee formed for better organization and follow-up.   After discussion PTSA willing to donate $1000 towards Be The Change if needed.  Will know by next month’s meeting.  


Battle of the Bands:  Lisa Young reported it went well.  It cost $350 to hire a sound system set-up.  Three bands participated:  Disproving Ground (later changed to Year of the Robot), Proving Ground, and Hemlock (announced as something else).   Three judges as well as 25% student vote resulted in Year of the Robot winning.  There was a good student turnout.  

Principal Koop:  Thanked those who helped with teacher reviews.  Needs additional volunteers for next Monday.  Discussed needs for dinner at parent teacher conference.   Needs 6 volunteers for each day of  Be the Change.
