Leadership VP: Leadership training by Jody Mower –Nominating Committee and awards. Voted to leave bylaws as submitted. Swarm award Nov. 15 deadline. A list was sent around to see who would like to continue as board members next year.

Student Rep. Reported on the Gold Rush. Funds will go to the Neighborhood House (Salt Lake), a service to homeless with daycare for those who are working or looking for job. Goal: $30,000.00. Many activities are planned.

Laurie Anderson would like to find a corporate partner that would help fund recognition of students through the Shields of Honor program. Took pictures of Board.

Dr. Koop: Reported that it looked like there would be a McDonalds going in by Wal Mart and hoped we could petition or lobby the city to put a crosswalk where the kids cross. Also discussed concerns he wanted to address with them about the back field area. Dr. Koop introduced a new teachers “Associates” club.

Reflections report: We have 40 entries that will be judged and ready to go to council. Nov.13. Asked if Laurie could make certificates. Ingrid will deliver them to Alpine Elementary for judging.

Guests from the Phoenix Alliance shared their concerns and their plan of action to lobby for higher tobacco taxes and better laws to protect kids from the tobacco industry. They are especially concerned with new products that appear to be mints, candy, breathe strips, toothpicks, that are packages as such and very addictive. Dr. Koop said we seemed very supportive of helping to spread the anti- tobacco information and asked what we might do with this information. We were told that Rep. Dougall (our rep.)is not supportive of the Alliance and there are at least 12 tobacco industry lobbyists on “Capitol Hill” telling legislators that tobacco is a “non-issue” in Utah. Nov. 18th from 7:30-12:00 would like youth to attend a rally at the Capitol to advocate the importance of tobacco use prevention in the wake of tobacco industry deception and marketing. Dr. Koop suggested that the Phoenix alliance members speak to Mrs. McPherson to coordinate information distribution or opportunities to participate with Michelle Salo, our Safety and Welfare Commissioner following up on what PTSA might do to help, and will check on PTSA website to see what they have to say about the issue. Dr. Koop mentioned that there is drug use comparison data for the years 2005-2009 that could be sent in an email.

President: Shelley reported that when a person opens a new account at Chase Bank between Oct.-Dec. 2009, and mentions supporting LPHS, $50.00 would be donated to PTSA. Pola posted this on the blog.

Pola needs a copy of the Activity Report for emailed to her to post on the blog/website to make it easily accessible to anyone that may need it.

Meeting adjourned 11:25 am.
