Minutes from 9/14/11 PTSA meeting

Lone Peak High School PTSA Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, September 14, 2011, 10:00 am
Lone Peak High School Conference Room

Members Present:  Annette Kindt, Diane Lohner, Marianna Richardson, Michelle Bagley, Chip Koop, Jim Smith, Julie Schow, Michele Salo, Lisa Shelton, Natalie Dalley
Members Excused:  Lissa Bangerter, Theresa Ebert Volunteer Hours (June to September 14):  165

I.  The meeting was called to order at 10:10 am by Annette Kindt, President.

II.  The Pledge was led by Annette Kindt, individual members were introduced.
III.   Minutes were read by Michelle Bagley, secretary.  Diane Lohner made a motion to approve, Laurie Anderson seconded. The minutes were approved as written.

IV.  Election of President-Elect - Julie Schow made a motion to elect Marianna Richardson as President-Elect, Diane Lohner seconded.  The vote was unanimous in favor. 

V. Financial Report - Diane Lohner, Treasurer
A.  Budget - Laurie mentioned putting the budget on the blog.  Laurie Anderson made a motion to accept the budget, Marianna seconded the motion.  The vote to approve the budget was unanimous.
B.  The "Basic Fiscal Management Procedures" and "Ethics/Conflict of Interest" forms were signed by the executive board.
VI.  President's Minute - Annette Kindt
A.  Changing banks - There was a discussion to change banks from the credit union to either Chase Bank or the Bank of American Fork.  Julie Schow made a motion to change banks to the Bank of American Fork.  Diane Lohner seconded the motion, the vote was unanimous in favor.
B.  Individual handbooks and volunteer lists were distributed to the appropriate commissioners.
C.  Meeting times and dates - After a discussion it was decided to keep the meetings on the second Wednesday of every month at 10:00 am.
D.  Reports -  Registration, Pictures and Meet the Candidates Night went smoothly.

VII.  Commission Reports
     A.  Health/Safety - Michelle Salo
1.  Set up a Drug Awareness/Prevention Table at Conferences, the contact is Eileen Barton.
2.  A discussion was held about also having some kind of Pornography Awareness information at conferences, Annette Kindt would contact presenters.
     B.  Reflections - due October 28 at 3:00pm
C.  Community Involvement
1.  Teacher Appreciation week - Natalie Dalley will give small seasonal gifts to teachers at least three times before Teacher Appreciation Week, which is May 7 - 11.
2.  Teacher Dinners - Julie Schow is in charge of getting food for 125 staff members from volunteers.  It was decided to continue providing homemade food.
D.  Teacher report - Jim Smith asked the parents if they preferred to rent or buy graduation gowns, the consensus was to buy them this year.
E.  Administrator report- Dr. Koop
- Lone Peak has been open 15 years
- There is a combined LPHS PTSA/SCC meeting about the Bond on Oct 6 at 1 pm
- The crosswalk lights are working and the students are using them
- Parent teacher conferences will be held in the cafeteria/gym for fall
- The district proposed to hold Graduation outside the school year, no members agreed.
- Parents need to give permission for students to dress in nontraditional ways for school pictures
VIII.  Upcoming events 
A.  Be The Change - September 27, 28 - more parent volunteers needed
B.  Parent Teacher Conferences - September 21, February 15

X.  The meeting was adjourned at 11:45 am.

PTSA Minutes for the Feb. meeting

Lone Peak High School PTSA Meeting
Wednesday, February 9, 2011 -  Main Office Board Room
Present: Theresa Ebert, Jody Mower, Diane Lohner, Lisa Young, Laurie Anderson, Rex Brimhall, Lisa Hogge, Michele Salo, Chartina Voorheis, Melissa Walker, Melisa Pitts, Annette Kindt, Chip Koop, Ilene Barton

Excused:  Laura Dollar, Roxanne Musselman, Keleen Beckstead

Volunteer hours:  72.5 (not including Theresa’s hours)

Reports of Executive Board and Commissioners:
Treasurer Report: Diane Lohner  reported, see attached.  She suggested using PTSA money for $300 to $500 scholarships for students.  Discussed amount to spend on Be the Change and Battle of the Bands and how much will be left for scholarships.  Formed committee to decide details.  Members are Diane Lohner, Laurie Anderson, Melissa Walker.

Leadership: Annette Kindt of nominating committee reported still need president elect position filled.  The rest of executive committee positions have potentials but still trying to reach those people.  Other general board positions also need to be filled.  There will be a signup at parent teacher conference on February 16.  

President:  Theresa reported Keleen Beckstead submitted Golden Apple Award for Craig Smith.   Dress Code Committee meeting postponed until March 2 at 10am.   Roxanne Musselman asked Theresa to mention that  the February and June ACT testing dates are the only dates that offer an option to request to have test booklet returned.  On March 1 all juniors at LP will be taking ACT test during school hours in the place of the UBSCT, paid for by the state legislature.  That day only juniors attend in the morning.  

Laurie Anderson reported that Brian Alba from Utah County Substance Abuse Coalition coming to LP during Parent Teacher Conference on February 16 to make presentations on dangers of new drugs available using common home ingredients.  Charlie Thurston, LP Resource Officer, will also attend to answer questions as well.   Charlie Thurston reported trying to get approval from department to present at Lone Peak Parent Teacher Conference.  Suggested he has a fact sheet with answers available to give out.  Could also request donations for K-9 purchase from patrons. 


Reflections:  Melissa Walker said still waiting to hear who won at State level.  Lone Peak students who reached state level are Benjamin Reneer for Composition and Christopher Running in 3D Art.   

Be the Change Day:  Chip reported it is scheduled for March 10 and 11.  Begins at 8am until 2:15.  Some students will be involved in a leadership position, but an adult will be present in every group.  Kyle Nelson will be the facilitator.  Compared to last year’s Be the Change, some activities may be altered slightly, but will still be very similar.  PTSA would like to contribute funds towards program.  Will know by next month the exact amount.   Lisa Hogge reported Chick-fil- A will donate 100 lunches.  They are also willing to host a spirit night at Chick-fil-A in American Fork.  They would give vouchers to students, if voucher is presented at time of purchase, then Chick-fil-A donates 20% back to Lone Peak.  Macy’s grocery store in Pleasant Grove willing to give $200 towards food in their store if we also pay $200.  Printing company called Design Press Printing will donate 200 shirts, 4 banners to advertise Be the Change for a total of $2,000 they would sponsor, if we will get 10 $200 sponsors whose names will be printed on t-shirts.  Recommended committee formed for better organization and follow-up.   After discussion PTSA willing to donate $1000 towards Be The Change if needed.  Will know by next month’s meeting.  


Battle of the Bands:  Lisa Young reported it went well.  It cost $350 to hire a sound system set-up.  Three bands participated:  Disproving Ground (later changed to Year of the Robot), Proving Ground, and Hemlock (announced as something else).   Three judges as well as 25% student vote resulted in Year of the Robot winning.  There was a good student turnout.  

Principal Koop:  Thanked those who helped with teacher reviews.  Needs additional volunteers for next Monday.  Discussed needs for dinner at parent teacher conference.   Needs 6 volunteers for each day of  Be the Change.

Reports of Executive Board and Commissioners:
Theresa:  Hawk system crosswalk update.  Has been moved to right before first turn into Wal-Mart.  Preference is coming up.  Discount available if buy ticket at school.  Reflection winner from Lone Peak has art in Alpine Community Arts calendar.  

Melissa Walker:  Other winners:  Christopher Running in musical composition, Benjamin Reneer in 3D art and Abby Smith received honorable mention.  Discussed ideas to get more students involved.
  
Ilene Barton:  Discussed spice/inhalants.  Classified as not for human consumption so can be sold.  Utah legislature HB 200 illegal to sell to under 21, HB23 to control substance differently, HB 192 regarding controlled substance committee.  Also mentioned HB201 regarding dating violence.    Several cities statewide passing ordinances.   Idea to have presentation made for information to give parents regarding this issue at Parent Teacher Conference February 16.   Lisa Hogge will do write up for next newsletter. 

Lisa Young:  Battle of the Bands update.  Looking for person to hire for sound equipment -will cost $350 to $400.   Principal Koop asked about bands providing own sound equipment.  PTA’s with participating bands (Lone Peak, Mountain Ridge, Timberline) will split cost, if necessary.  Jody Mower made a motion to use $250 from Executive Account.  Diane Lohner seconded.  Motion passed.  Will be held January 21 after Pleasant Grove/Lone Peak basketball game.  Lisa looking for judges.  Laurie suggested including audience vote.  Publicity includes announcements, posters.  Michael Welch, PTSA student rep, volunteered to MC.  Principal Koop thanked Lisa for all her time organizing.  He does have concerns regarding lyrics, behavior, and conflict with Nightstalk held in spring.  Gary Dunn, who does Nightstalk, asked to consider having one of the Junior Highs host event in future.

Michael Welch:  Shields of Honor nominees all invited to social for recognition.  Next one will be held in March.  

Kelleen Beckstead:  Craig Smith nominated for Golden Apple Award.  Needs letters of recommendation by January 19.  

Principal Koop:  Kyle Nelson has agreed to run Be The Change this year around March.  He will be paid for his time by school.  Including other costs, need about $3,000 to run program.  Lisa Hogge asked if any PTA money available.  Theresa said we would be willing to vote on giving money.   Dr. Koop wants to make sure personal information is handled correctly during session, avoiding full disclosure regarding personal information.   May use Chartina’s MAGIC class to keep momentum going.    Dr. Koop was asked by students to advertise their concert.  Poster was discussed. 

Dr. Koop and Theresa reported on the Dress Code meeting held Thursday, Jan 6, with students and parents attending. The  goal was to allow input by students and parents. At the meeting, Syd Hackford took feedback regarding Lone Peak’s dress code.   A lot of good input was given.  Syd will come up with proposals.    There will be a meeting Wed. Jan 26 at 10am in the conference room to define/revise the LP dress code.
